The Australian National Maritime Museum is proud to have been selected as the host for the 22nd International Congress of Maritime Museums. This is the first time that the Congress has been held in Australia, and only the second time in the Southern Hemisphere. 130 delegates are travelling to Sydney from across Europe, Great Britain, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific.
The delegates include directors and CEOs, curators, exhibition designers and volunteers from major national and regional maritime museums including representatives from the Royal Museums Greenwich, the Maritime Museum of Denmark, the National Maritime Museum Chile, South Street Seaport and Mystic Seaport in the United States, the China Maritime Museum, Korea’s Incheon National Maritime Museum, Fiji Museum, Heritage Samoa and Cook Islands Voyaging Society.
Four days of formal presentations, workshops and roundtables will address the theme, Museums in Action: Moving Forward with Courage and Conviction. There will be a strong focus on First Nations cultures and on sustainability and the role of museums in addressing climate change and the impact of rising sea levels.
