This November, Wantok Musik Foundation brings together First Nations Australian, Solomon Islands and Australian artists for a program of cultural exchange and collaborative music-making, based at Dreamcast Theatre in Honiara.
Over an intensive residency, musicians will share songs, language and sound, blending First Nations Australian, Solomon Islands and Australian musical traditions, from yidaki and panpipes to garamut and contemporary song-writing. Alongside the residency, artists will run community workshops exploring sound and language exchange, connecting local musicians, students and community members with the visiting artists.
The collaboration culminates in two public performances: a concert in Honiara on 13 November and a second show in Auki, Malaita Province, on 14 November, showcasing the new music and cultural connections created through the residency.
Wantok Musik celebrates the deep and ongoing ties between Australia and the Pacific, and the power of music to build understanding across culture and language.
